Books for Beginning Readers

I teach reading with a phonics approach and I have often been frustrated by books that are advertised for "beginning readers." Many of them have very few words per page, but they are often mostly long sight-words. So even though they are short, the child has to learn the word list for the book before they are able to read the book.

I was so excited when I found the Bob books. They are totally phonics-based. Even the earliest reader can read them. They are organized into levels with specific reading skills in each one. The first set focuses only on 3-letter words with short-vowel sounds.

They have been great for my young reader. She is able to experience the success of reading a real book! And they are actually pretty clever little stories with a some humor.
